Questions

The point

A yes/no question with be moves be before the subject. A yes/no question with another verb starts with do or does. A question word comes first: where, what, when.

Form and use

A yes-no question can be answered with yes or no. When the verb is be, move that form in front of the subject. Are you ready? Is the gate shut? Am I early? The short answer repeats be. Yes, I am. No, it isn't. Do not add do in front of be. Do you be ready is not a real question.

For other verbs in the present, start with do or does, then the subject, then the base. Do you live here? Does he live here? Does she need a map? Does belongs with he, she, and it. Do belongs with I, you, we, and they. The main verb does not take -s. Does he lives here puts the ending in the wrong place.

A question word asks for one missing piece. The set is who, what, where, when, why, how, and which. Put that word first, then the same order as a yes-no question. Where do you live? What does she need? When is the bus due? Why are they quiet? How does this open? Which coat is yours? Who asks about a person. What asks about a thing. Where asks about a place. When asks about time. Why asks about a reason. How asks about manner or means. Which picks one item from a group you can point to.

Who is special when it is the subject. If who does the action, do not add do or does. Who called? Who needs the key? Who did call and Who does need the key are not the ordinary present questions. If who is the object, the helper comes back. Who did you call? Who does she need? Test it with the answer. If the answer is the subject, as in Nia called, ask Who called? If the answer is the object, as in I called Nia, ask Who did you call?
