Future forms

The point

Will plus the base is a decision or a prediction: I will send it. Be going to plus the base is a plan you already have: She is going to leave. Will does not take to.

Form and use

Will plus the base talks about the future. Use it for a decision you make as you speak: The phone is ringing. I will answer it. Use it also for a prediction you believe: It will rain tonight. Will does not change for he, she, or it, and it takes no to and no -s. I will leave. You will leave. He will leave. She will leave. It will rain. We will leave. They will leave. The short form is 'll. The negative is will not or won't. Will you leave? Yes, I will. No, I won't.

Be going to names a plan you already have, or a future you can see from evidence now. Be still agrees with the subject. I am going to leave. You are going to leave. He is going to leave. She is going to leave. It is going to rain. We are going to leave. They are going to leave. Then add the base. She is going to start a course next month. Look at those clouds. It is going to rain.

Choose by meaning. A plan made earlier usually takes be going to: We are going to meet at six. A decision made at this moment takes will: You look tired. I will drive. A prediction from what you can see leans toward be going to. A prediction from belief leans toward will. Do not mix the shapes. She will going, She is going leave, and She going to leave are wrong.

Negatives and questions follow be. I am not going to leave. She is not going to leave. Are you going to leave? Is he going to leave? One limit on will: do not put will inside an if-clause. If it rains, we will stay. Not If it will rain.
