The point
Use a or an when you introduce one countable thing. Use the when both sides already know which one. Use no article for the idea in general. An comes before a vowel sound: an owner, an audit.
Form and use
Use a or an to introduce one new countable noun. The listener does not know which one yet. Choose by sound, not by spelling. An hour and an MBA start with a vowel sound, so they take an. A university starts with a consonant sound, /juː/, so it takes a. The article stands before the whole phrase: a late decision, an early meeting. A singular countable noun cannot stand bare.
Use the when the noun is already known, unique in the situation, or pinned down by what follows. Both of you can see the chart, so it is the chart. The sun is unique here. A superlative takes the: the best plan, the earliest train. After you first say a report, the next mention is the report.
Zero article marks a general idea. A general plural takes none: decisions take time. A general uncountable takes none: water freezes. Most proper names take none: Mina lives in Seoul. Meals and languages usually take none. lunch is at noon she speaks Korean Add the only for one particular meal or one particular variety, such as the lunch we ordered.
Place names follow fixed lists, not emphasis. With the: rivers, oceans, plural countries, unions. the Nile the Pacific the United States With no the: most countries, cities, streets. France Busan King Street She needs an hour at a university in the United States, then lunch on King Street. The decision on the desk is final. A bare singular, the before lunch, or the King Street are the usual mistakes.
