Speaking

Three figures, no mood

Say it. Nothing is recorded.

This speaking turn describes three figures in under a minute. You read the script aloud, then say the figures in your own words. Nothing is recorded. There is no chart on the wall and no recording to replay. Keep compared with, level, and sharper than as facts, not as feelings. Up against last month is not the same as beating the plan. If you forget one percent, do not invent it. End with the action the figures still allow, not with a word such as healthy.

Read the script aloud. Nothing is recorded. Then give three figures in your own words, in under a minute. Keep the comparisons apart. End with the action, not a mood.

Read this aloud

Three figures, and no mood. First, May orders were up 6 percent compared with April. Second, the rise was not even. Coastal accounts rose 11 percent, and inland accounts were level. Third, the rise was sharper than April's rise, and it was still 2 percent under the plan. The line looks strong only against a weak April. Do not say we beat the plan. The action is a call to the two inland buyers who delayed, not a larger order for the coast. I will make those calls by Thursday.

A shape that holds

  • Figure one, with compared with.
  • Figure two, the split: rose, and level.
  • Figure three: sharper than, and still under the plan.
  • The action, not a mood.
