Who you are, in one sentence

People remember the sentence that says what you do. They drop the sentence that lists your company, your rank, and your team in that order because that is how Korean business cards are read.

Objective

Introduce your role with a subject and a verb, not a stack of as-a phrases.

On the exam

Speaking and the academic discussion both punish a late subject. “I am working in X as a manager of Y” spends the opening on grammar the rater has already stopped trusting.

Don't translate it like this

Don't say

I am working in Hanbit as a manager of marketing.

Say

I lead marketing for the Korea team at Hanbit.

Lead is the job. The company can come second. “As a manager of” is a calque of 담당 팀장, and “I am working in” sounds unfinished.

Phrases

Read them aloud. Listen if you want a model. Nothing is recorded.

Let's begin with the decision we need today.

오늘은 내려야 할 결정부터 시작합시다.

A meeting without a decision is a status update. Name the decision.

I think we should delay the launch.

출시를 미뤄야 한다고 봅니다.

Position first. A speaking score starts with whether the position is obvious.

In my view, the room should decide today.

제 생각에는 오늘 이 자리에서 결정하는 편이 낫습니다.

In my view, not according to me. According to needs a source that is not you.

Owners: Mina on the parts, Jun on the note.

담당은 부품은 미나, 기록은 준입니다.

Names, not “the team.” A team does not own a task.

In the room

A first meeting with a vendor

You have forty seconds at the start. The vendor does not know your team.

  1. You

I'll go first. I lead marketing for the Korea team. Today's decision is whether we keep the Friday review.

  2. Vendor

And you decide that, or your director?

  3. You

I recommend. The director decides. I'll send the note either way.

What would you say?

All three have to be right to close the lesson.

1. What you sayA partner asks who you are. You run marketing for the Korea team at a company called Hanbit.
2. What you sayYou need to say what you can decide and what you cannot.
3. RegisterWhich line belongs in a speaking response about your job?

Answer every question, then check.
